P03.01. Acupuncture's Effectiveness at Treating Subclinical Hypothyroid Disease via the HPA/HPT Axis: A Multiple Case Series
نویسنده
چکیده
Purpose: Subclinical hypothyroid disease (SHypo) is defined as having serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) concentration above the normal reference range while serum free thyroxine (FT4) and free triiodothyronine (FT3) are within reference range. It is estimated that 4% to 10% of the general population has subclinical hypothyroidism, increasing to 20% in women over 60 years of age. The current treatment recommendation for SHypo with TSH levels between 3 MIU/L and 5 mIU/L is to monitor levels every 6 to 12 months. Studies have shown that levothyroxine is not effective for this TSH group. Based on Hans Selye’s general adaption theory (GAS), it is known that acute and chronic stress can affect thyroid function via the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axes. Acupuncture can reduce the body’s stress response and therefore should improve thyroid function. This research was conducted to determine if acupuncture is a viable treatment option for SHypo.

Comparison of hematological parameters in untreated and treated subclinical hypothyroidism and primary hypothyroidism patients
Backgrounds: Thyroid hormones play an important physiological role in human metabolism. Erythrocyte abnormalities are frequently associated with thyroid disorder. However, they are rarely investigated and related to the subclinical and primary hypothyroidism in Kashmiri Patients. In this study an attempt was made to study hematological parameters in untreated and treated subclinical hypothyroi...
متن کاملResveratrol Ameliorates the Anxiety- and Depression-Like Behavior of Subclinical Hypothyroidism Rat: Possible Involvement of the HPT Axis, HPA Axis, and Wnt/β-Catenin Pathway
Metabolic disease subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is closely associated with depression-like behavior both in human and animal studies, and our previous studies have identified the antidepressant effect of resveratrol (RES) in stressed rat model. The aim of this study was to investigate whether RES would manifest an antidepressant effect in SCH rat model and explore the possible mechanism. A S...
متن کاملIs Subclinical Thyroid Dysfunction Associated With with Coronary Heart Disease?
Introduction: Previous cohort studies reported contradictory data on the association between subclinical thyroid dysfunction and coronary heart disease (CHD). Regarding this, the present study was conducted to illuminate this relationship. Materials and Methods: For the purpose of the study, 3,066 participants employed in a study conducted by Azizi et al. aged ≥ 20 years were subjected to thyro...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis in patients with subclinical thyroid dysfunction recently reported to have either symptoms or organ involvements with potential morbidity, in order to better differentiate these patients with respect to controls. PATIENTS Sixtythree patients with subclinical hyperthyroidism (HyperT), 178 normal subjects (EuT) and 106 patients...

Introduction: The purpose and our novelty of the current study were to evaluate the HPA function in adult survivors of primary non-pituitary brain tumors and its association with treatment-related factors such as received dose to the organs at risk, age at irradiation, surgery, and adjuvant chemotherapy in patients treated with RT for brain tumors. Moreover, it aimed to achie...
